While the artist wants the viewer to interpret this as she will, this painting was inspired by two sources: the quote that the prodigal daughter returns to the village to burn it down, and the story in the Bible where they catch a bunch of foxes, light their tails, and send them through the victim’s fields, thereby winning the battle.
